You really want to take a cruise but you also really want to go to a spa for physical fitness and maybe a little pampering. In the world today you can do both. Years ago you were lucky to find a spa on a cruise ship. If there was one, it was in a really remote area of the ship. As for physical fitness there was very little equipment and most of it was tired. When people started to become more conscious of their looks and health the cruise lines revised their way of thinking. Cruise travel now can double as a spa vacation as well as learning a new physical fitness program.

The newer cruise ships have gone to great lengths to accommodate the cruise passenger who also wants to beautify and tone up. The cruise lines have installed state of the art equipment, added numerous exercise classes, and offer the newest beauty treatments available. Many of the cruise lines have relocated their fitness centers to the top decks of the ships with lots of windows so you can have a view while you are on the treadmill, bike, or lifting weights. Tucked up into the corner is a big TV so you can watch the news from back home. The cruise ships now have three distinct areas, one for fitness, one for spa treatments and one for the beauty salon.

As mentioned, the fitness centers on cruise ships are now a thing to behold. They all will definitely have treadmills, Stairmasters, free weights rowing machines and bikes. Some cruise lines even have complete Nautilus machines. Popular exercise machines, especially on sea days, may require you to sign up for a particular time of day and will limit the amount of time you can use the machine.

If you want to use your cruise travel as a vehicle to start an exercise regime there are physical trainers onboard. Their services, however, will cost you extra. The trainer will ask you lots of questions about your health and diet and then will come up with a personal regime for you. He or she will then book times through the week for you to work together.

All cruise lines offer exercise classes, yoga, aerobics, dance, water aerobics, even Pilates and kickboxing. Some of these may require a slight fee. To find out when these classes are held consult your daily bulletin for times and fees, if any.

Now, you're thinking why would I start a physical fitness regime while on a cruise ship, especially since they serve all that food, 24 hours a day? Well along with the newer, shinier and better facilities the cruise lines have also instituted what they call spa cuisine. Everyday they will offer a "lighter side" menu if you are really serious about you new physical fitness regime.

Don't assume that if the ship is older, it won't have a decent fitness and spa area. Check with your cruise travel agent to find out what facilities are onboard the cruise ship you have chosen. For instance, the QE2 is an older ship but it has a beautifully outfitted spa with a large staff. Celebrity's slight older Century has a Thalassotherapy pool for their passenger's enjoyment and it has become quite popular among their cruisers.

When you board your cruise ship go to the spa area. Usually on the first day the staff will be explaining their treatments and occasionally demonstrate how it is done. Sometimes they will raffle off treatments, so go to the demonstration just for that reason. If you have definitely decided that you will be doing some treatments, book them on day one to get the best times. Any beauty salon appointments should be made then too, hair appointments for formal night go very quickly.

Many times the spa and beauty staff will discount their services on days when the ship is in port. If you are going to a few cruise destinations that you have previously visited, take advantage of these offers. You will find that you can pick your time of day to get these treatments done with little or no competition. If you are an early riser, choose an appointment in the morning and then get off the ship to enjoy that port. Or, conversely, disembark early to explore your new port, and then return to the ship in the early afternoon to take advantage of a discounted treatment.

When you go to your spa appointment, do not wear jewelry or fancy clothes. Most treatments are a bit messy and you don't want to ruin any of your belongings. It is best just to wear a robe. When you get there an attendant will give you a towel and a private locker to put away your things. You may then be asked to wait in a room. Your technician will come out to take you to the room designated for that particular application. You will also fill out a form on your health and any surgeries that you have had. The room you are in will most likely have a shower. It will definitely have a sound system to play soothing music and there will be an array of exotic oils and creams.

The cruise ship spas have gotten quite creative. They now offer couples massages where you and your partner are in the same room with different massage therapists. Then there are four hand massages where two people work on you at the same time. Some of the cruise lines offer in suite massages and some even have massages on the deck.

By far the highest percentage of staff are women but there a few men. If you have a preference between male or female spa technicians, state it when you make your appointment. Some people are uncomfortable lying naked on a table with a therapist of the opposite sex. Check the cruise ships policy on tipping. Some cruise lines automatically tack on a 15% charge to your bill while on others you may have to pay in cash. To save embarrassment, check at the time you make your appointments.

There are three lines that allow you to make your spa appoints before boarding the ship. Princess, Windstar and Celebrity all offer this option. In some cases they even have packages that you can book in advance. Be careful here though, they may give you some very early morning appointments which means you have to go and change them on the very first day. This is not the best policy since they should be giving you prime appointments for booking ahead.

Beauty salons will offer a full array of services. You can have your nails done, your hair colored or hand and foot treatments aside from just a trim. Most of the beauty salons have Europeans staffs. That is not necessarily a bad thing. Places like Austria require their beauty students to go to the equivalent of our college.

See, it is possible to turn your cruise into a spa vacation or physical fitness week. Just follow what your trainer or your beauty technicians tell you and eat the spa cuisine. You've just achieved three goals, a little bit of pampering, a fitness regime, and a light and healthy diet. This may be a new way for you to view cruise travel.

Ten Tips For Getting Acquainted With the Great Outdoors

If you're new to spending time in nature, but want to be a good sport, here are a few easy steps you can take to overcome your fear of crawly things and really enjoy the great outdoors.

1. Confront the Critters Head-on: To avoid ticks, apply Permethrin, a derivative of crushed dried Daisy Chrysanthemum flowers, to all garments, shoes, socks, hats and backpacks. If picnicking apply it to the tablecloth before you pack up. Permethrin also keeps chiggers and other biting insects away. Bears, raccoons, snakes - in fact, most wild animals will avoid you if they can. In the summer, I do not grab any handholds while climbing without looking first, just in case a snake has decided to sun itself on the trail. Accidental encounters are always possible. Don't run; that will encourage a predator to chase you. In most cases, if you stand your ground, yell, wave your arms and make a racket, the animal will run away. Never, ever feed wild animals - and never try to touch or pet a wild animal - EVER.

2. Fashion Sense: Fabric Do's and Don'ts: Fabrics for outdoor wear are lighter and more comfortable than ever. My personal favorite is wicking, because it is soft, machine washable (air dry to avoid static cling) and does not harbor body odor. Garments are different thicknesses for different seasons. You can be active and still be fresh as a daisy. Whether you perspire or there's a sudden rain shower, wicking dries out quickly. Hypothermia occurs when your body temperature suddenly plummets; being soaked is the most dangerous risk in outdoor activities. Seriously, it could kill you. Avoid cotton, because if it gets wet, it never dries. I'm still fond of wool; merino wool is soft and not itchy, but it is pricy. While silk is lovely, it's not durable and requires special laundering.

3. Footwear: Do's and Don'ts: If you're hiking rough terrain, riding mountain bikes, having a picnic, or strolling the beach, the right footwear is the difference between fun and frustration. For most outdoor activities, the appropriate footwear can be rented. But you'll want to purchase your own hiking boots. If you're hiking under five miles, a sturdy, three-season boot with ankle support that lets your foot breathe is sufficient. I hike all year round, so my own Italian leather, Vibram sole, wicking-lined boots are the most expensive equipment I own. They fit beautifully from the first day and I've never had a blister.

4. Carry the Right Bag: I typically carry a bookbag-size day pack when I'm not staying overnight - and sometimes even when I am. It holds all of my pocket survival kit essentials, plus an extra layer of clothes, water, binoculars, snacks and whatever else I choose to carry. That leaves my hands free to use my binoculars, camera or notebook. Also, when I stop for a break, my pack makes a useful backrest.

5. Accessories: Hats and Belts: In winter I wear a balaclava, which covers my head and neck and can be pulled over my face. Ninety percent of body heat is lost through the head, so I wear a lined wool balaclava. If I wear a hat in other seasons, I want it to shield my eyes from the sun, cover my neck, have holes for circulation, and fit properly. Belts can come in very handy, but I typically do not wear one.

6. Eyewear: I just started wearing eyeglasses on a full-time basis. In the winter, they were an obstacle. In the summer, they're an effective pollen and insect barrier. Sunglasses can reduce glare and they also offer your eyes protection.

7. Hair and Makeup: If you have long hair, a braid, bun or ponytail keeps your hair neat and out of your way. The older I get, the shorter my hair gets. I depend on a PABA-free 30-SPF sunscreen to cover my face, ears, neck, and hands - even in winter. Sun reflecting off snow can be very damaging. I typically do not wear daytime makeup, but if I did, I would use the sunblock as my base.

8. Water: When I hiked in the desert I carried a bladder bag, which is a pliable water bottle with a tube extending from it. The bag fit in my daypack, carried 1.5 liters of water and I could suck on the tube whenever I felt thirsty. This is another really useful hands-free, affordable device. The only drawback - this is not designed for beverages other than water.

9. Gadgets: If you enjoy new gadgets, GPS units, binoculars, cameras, and other devices that make exploring the woods, the parks, the beaches or the deserts fun will add a dimension to your experience and give you something to do if you don't feel quite ready to put a worm on a hook or rappel that cliff.

10. Win Big: Attitude is 99 percent of any situation. Anything new takes time to really experience. You may be inspired to use your camera to photograph clouds, diffracted sunlight on a spider web or the bud just about to open. The sound of moving water always makes me feel rested, even on a very long hike. I never tire of the sounds of birds calling or singing. I'm determined to learn bird language. There is nothing quite like the smell of a pine grove or the view from a mountain ridge. And the infinite and endless variety in the texture of tree trunks and bits of rock can keep me occupied for hours.

The face of the City is constantly changing due to the construction of new skyscrapers, shopping malls and hotels. Jakarta is mainly a business and political City and not really a tourist destination, but the older colonial parts of the City are very interesting and the museums have a lot of fascinating exhibits. Jakarta, like you would expect, is the most expensive place in Indonesia, as well as the most polluted and most congested. It can be very hard to cope with all of the hustle, dirt, crime and cost, but if you can you will find an exciting City with plenty to offer. Kota - This is the old Town of Batavia, which was the capital of the Dutch East Indies and the best example of the colonial era in Indonesia. Though much of the old town has been destroyed or demolished over the years, some of the old Colonial buildings are still in active use, and the area has a definite Dutch feel to it. The centre of the old Town is the pebble stone square known as Taman Fatahillah and this is the key to being able to orientate yourself around the sights of the old Town. The canal of Kali Besar is one block to the west of the square and runs alongside the Ciliwung River. This was a very prosperous area and on the west bank are some of the high class homes that date from the eighteenth Century. The Chicken market bridge is the last remaining drawbridge from the Dutch era, it is at the north end of the Kali Besar. Buses always come by on their routes and the city train also has a stop here. Jakarta History Museum - This museum is housed in the old town hall of Batavia, which is on the south side of Taman Fatahillah. It is a well built building, which was originally constructed in 1627 and added to in the early 1700s. It was from here that the Dutch administered their colony, and the cities law courts were also here as well as their main prison compound. It contains plenty of heavy, carved furniture from the colonial, as well as other memorabilia from the Dutch period. Open, 9am till 3pm, Tuesday to Sunday. Admission: 1,000Rp Wayang Museum - This museum is also on the Taman Fatahillah, and has a great assortment of Wayang puppets. It also has examples of puppets from other Countries like Cambodia, China and India. This building was formerly the museum of old Batavia and was built in 1912 on the site of the former Dutch church which was demolished in 1808 as the Dutchman "Daendels" plan to rid the City of its unhealthy areas. In the downstairs courtyard, there are memorials to previous governors who were buried on site. Open, 9am till 3pm, Tuesday to Sunday. Admission: 1,000Rp Fine Arts Museum - Built in the 1860s, the palace of Justice building is now the Fine arts museum. It has a nice collection of contemporary paintings from prominent artists. They also have some ceramics on show from Chinese items to Majapahit offerings. Open, 9am till 3pm, Tuesday to Sunday. Admission: 1,000Rp Gereja Sion - This church was built in 1695, and is the oldest Church in Jakarta. It is on Jl Pangeran Jayakarta near the Kota train station. The exterior of the Church is actually pretty plain but inside copper chandeliers, the original organ and the baroque pulpit makes it very appealing. Though thousands of people have been buried here there are very few tombs left remaining. Sunda Kelapa - Just a 10 minute walk from the Taman Fatahillah, the old City port of Sunda Kelapa is full of wonderful Macassar schooners and the brightly coloured sails of these boats make for great viewing. The ships are still a vital means of transporting goods to outlying Islands. Guides hang around the docks and for a few thousand rupiah will show you around and tell you some insightful stories. You can also take a ride out to the offshore fish market for around 5,000Rp. Admission, 250Rp to the dock area. Maritime Museum - This is an old VOC warehouse that was built in 1645 and is by the entrance to the Sunda Kelapa. It has examples of Indonesian crafts from around the ages and has photos of the voyages from Europe to Jakarta. The building itself is well worth the visit and the lookout posts are part of the old City wall. Just before the entrance to the museum proper, is the old watchtower that was built in 1839, it has brilliant views over the harbour. Opening hours are hit and miss, so try to find the caretaker. National Museum - This museum, constructed in 1862, is considered the paramount museum in Indonesia, and one of the finest in South East Asia. It has a huge ethnic and relief maps of Indonesia on which you can track your travels. The museum has a variety of different cultural displays that show a diverse collection of clothing, instruments, model houses and religious items. In addition the museum has a fine collection of Chinese ceramics that even date back to the Han dynasty of the third Century. The museum is sometimes known as the Elephant house due to the giant bronze elephant that was a gift from the King of Thailand, and that now stands outside. Open, 8.30am till 2.30pm, Tuesday to Sunday. Admission: 750Rp. Guides are around who can conduct tours in various different languages. National Monument - This 130 metres high monument stands over Merdeka square and is Jakartas chief landmark. The construction was started in 1961 but was not finished until 1975, when it was officially opened by President Soeharto. At the base is the National History Museum which tells the story of the Indonesian struggle for independence. On national holidays and at the weekends the queues can be long. Open, 9am till 5pm, daily. Admission: 600Rp or 3,100Rp which includes a ride to the top. Lapangan Banteng - Just east of Merdeka square is this nineteenth century colonial square. It has some of the best examples of Dutch colonial architecture in the whole of Jakarta. The Catholic Cathedral was built at the turn of the twentieth Century, and is opposite the principal place of worship for Jakartas Muslim community, the Istiqlal Mosque. To the east of the square is the Supreme Court that was built, along with the Ministry of finance, in 1809 by that man "Daendel" to replace those buildings torn down.

Have Bali Bombs Forgotten?

Immediately after the occasion, thousands of tourists were rushing out to depart from the island only international airport, foreign governments issued travel warning, thousands of confirmed arrivals canceled, hotel occupancy plunged down from nearly 90 to less than 20 percent, even the only Bali based international airliner stopped their operation. Business players in Bali confirmed that the effect of the second attack was far worse that the previous one.

In some ways, the terrorist successfully fulfill their objective in spreading fears. The whole picture led to global psychological fear, which was worse than, and definitely worsen its economical effect. Not only foreign tourists, local residence also avoided crowds, especially those where Western tourists and residents used to hang around. Supermarket, shopping malls, hotels, airport, tourist spots, cafes and restaurants, were just to name some.

Now things seemed to slowly get back to normal pace. The most obvious evidence was weakening security check in public places. In many shopping malls, security guards started to hang their metal detectors. They did not check visitor belongings any longer. Closing to the holiday seasons, international airliner operating flights to Bali confirmed their fully booked status well in advance, as well as hotels and private villa rentals.

Last week our company held a little farewell party for our resigning team members. With a courageous spirit of fighting the terror fear, we decided to go to Menega, one among tens or hundreds of beachfront fresh-sea-food huts along Jimbaran bay, which has been one of the ground-zeros of the second bomb attack. Two years ago, many of visiting foreign and local tourists as well as locals working at the restaurant were killed and severely injured in this place.

The scene was surprisingly different from what I expected before. On a small motorbike, I struggled to find a little parking space which was already full with hundred of not only cars but also big tourist coaches. When I finally got together with the group, we were sent out from Menega, the extended restaurant did not have enough space to accommodate all of us. Almost all tables spreading from the entrance to the sandy beach steeping to the water were occupied.

We were lucky enough to get a space at another restaurant next to Menega. Those who are used to this place would understand that next door here means different cashier while the beach tables are borderless. Whilst other restaurants were also having decent number of visitors, Menega was definitely the one enjoying the most of them. That was possibly the reason the terror executor had in mind when selecting it as a target of his suicidal attack. But something which remains my mind until now is whether they choose Menega to memorize the tragedy or it has just simply forgotten.

Anyway, for whatever reasons, this popular sunset dining spot is still offering its extraordinary culinary experience. Magnificent sunset in your eyes, smooth ocean breeze on your skin, laughter on your ears, the smell of grilled fish on your noose, and taste of wine and wooden-grilled oysters on your mouth are fabulous combination which is just too good to miss out. For those who are still keeping a little fear, your little courageous gut to pay a visit is definitely worthwhile.

The Best is Yet to Be After You Throw the Bouquet: Your Honeymoon

Forty or more years ago, honeymoon spots were perfectly clear in people's minds, mostly as the Niagara Falls, Hawaii, or a neighborhood hotel for a few days stay. Even the stinkiest hotels had honeymoon suites, then. Only some couples belonging to the jet set had their honeymoons in Monaco or in some such place in Europe. In addition, it used to be that the groom chose the honeymoon site and surprised the bride.

With the honeymoon the new husband tacked on the lady, the bride of the olden days "acted" happy and delighted, but the trick word is "acted" here, and no one wants to start a marriage with an act. Being part of a couple deserves sincerity, and the honeymoon should be one both people will enjoy; therefore, the honeymoon would be more successful if the future bride and groom planned this important step into their marriage together.

A honeymoon is a serious event. It should be arranged with care and should be planned in advance.

As times have changed, so have the honeymoons. Nowadays, any one place in the entire world can be a honeymoon destination, and why not? If a couple have similar tastes and they both enjoy wildlife, why shouldn't they have their honeymoon with a rhinoceros peeking into their hut in Africa?

Joking aside, the decision for a honeymoon spot should start about half a year before the wedding or even earlier. The couple should decide together on the location of their honeymoon: a ski resort, a jungle, a local spot, a resort hotel, a city or town overseas, a beach, a mountaintop, or a cabin on a cruise ship.

The budget is also important, because a wedding is difficult on any family's budget as it is. The traditional way is: if the bride or the bride's parents are financing the wedding, the groom or the groom's parents finance the honeymoon. If both families are pitching in for both events, then the financial situation of the families should be the first consideration.

If a couple can come up with a budget they can work with, they should first write down the possible expenses as a list: transportation expenses including airplane or cruise tickets, car rentals, taxi rides, and sightseeing trips; lodging expenses including meals, tips, taxes, and extras; and incidentals. Incidentals depend where the couple is heading to. For example, if they are going to be trekking in the jungle, they will need boots, jungle wear, insect repellents, first aid kits, binoculars, etc.

Tour packages and all-inclusive honeymoon packages can be money and time savers if they contain everything the couple wants. If the couple is reserving a honeymoon package, they have to make sure the weather will fit their plans in the place they will go. For example, reserving a Caribbean cruise during the hurricane season could have dire results. Some promotional offers, too, may contain off-season bargains that may not fit with the couple's expectations, and the trip may not be refundable either. Key points like weather, refundability, and exchange of location possibilities should be cleared out, in writing, with the travel agent before any other arrangements are made.

A good travel agent should advise the couple in everything they need to do, like inoculations and documents for an out of the country location, and warn them of unsafe localities. Also, while perusing the colorful travel pamphlets, the couple should remember that those inviting photos are of the best-looking parts of their destination and the better rooms of the hotels.

Obtaining maps, brochures, and other details from the travel agent and the tourism bureaus is a good idea. Once everything is planned and all the information is put together in one easy-to-reach folder, double checking the reservations, packing lists, identifications and other necessities should be done again one week before the trip. Having enough knowledge and some kind of a plan will save the couple time and money and will prevent unnecessary hassles.

Donald Trump Announces Luxurious Trump Ocean Club in Panama

Famous real estate developer, Donald J. Trump of the Trump Organization and Mr. Roger Khafif, President of the K Group (A Panama Resort Developer), unveiled a $220 million, mixed-use development to be named Trump Ocean, International Hotel and Tower in Panama City, Panama. The project has been expanded from 1.8-million-sq.-ft project to a 2.4-million-sq.-ft, 65 story waterfront condominium tower development that will include 300 hotel condominium units, 500 condominium units, 1500-1700 parking spaces, retail shops, an International Casino, a private beach club on Contadora Island, a 24-hour Yacht Club and Pier, world-class wellness spa, state-of-the-art gym, pool deck, full-service meeting and event spaces, and a business center. It is expected to be completed in 2009. This is the Trump Organization's first real estate investment in Central America.

The Trump Ocean Club, Panama, is being built on a beachfront lot with views of the Pacific Ocean and the Panama Bay, in the district of Punta Pacifica. Punta Pacifica is a newly developing area on a peninsula that extends into the Pacific Ocean, bordering the financial center and the residential area of Punta Paitilla, on land that was reclaimed from the sea. It neighbors high-end malls, high-rent offices and other luxurious high-rise condominiums. It is linked directly to the rest of the city by the new highway called 'Corredor Sur' that guarantees accessibility to any area, including the airport, in less than 15 minutes.

The project is to be built on an artificial peninsula on the Panama Bay and will cover an area of 140,000 sq. ft. The property will be 855 ft. tall and the total construction area will be more than 2.4 million square feet. The $220-million development will offer many high-end amenities including a 45,000 square-foot casino, spa, pool deck, a private beach club on Contadora island in the bay, a 24-hour yacht club consisting of 500 one, two and three bedroom condominiums, as well as 300 hotel rooms, which will also be sold as furnished condominium properties. The construction on the ultra-luxury property should begin by the end of the year and the development is expected to be completed by 2009. And, as for the pricing, the one to three bedroom condominium units will be priced at $250,000 to $450,000 and the hotel condominium properties will be priced for around $250,000.

2007 Private Space Tourism Spaceship Manufacturing Outlook

Well it looks like spaceship manufacturing is getting underway and the privatization of space is nearly here. One question remains however? Simon Says; "How large a fleet of 'rocket gliders' should Branson order for purchase?"

Well my thoughts are this; they should buy Eight units and 15 motors now because he will need 3 working units at all times (three flights a day). After each flight complete 150 pt. inspections. And realize that you need two units to test new modifications and ideas and spares. After the first four months order 4 more and think on this; 40% of all those who signed up will change their minds and he will want to go bigger in the future, so save the cash to build larger units every 8-10 months, thus time to build them and test them too. They need to expedite the first batch and that means a smaller order will bring them onto the ramp quicker.

Next once the tourism starts the list will grow and this means they can increase the size of the units and new technologies will come to light faster. If the useful life of a Space Rocket Glider is 25 flights to 40 flights then the ROI must also be considered. Now then, we need these units to go some 200 flights before major overhaul and that should be the goal, for total efficiency. I want to beat the best efforts and plans, not get caught SOL with problems, I only care about winning.

Sell advertising on the side of the aircraft-space craft and after they come back down the advertising will be somewhat melted off.

And yes I know Richard Branson is a huge PR Blaster, but so what? What's wrong with that? Sometimes someone out in front causes enough commotion to get others to follow and therefore ends up with a self-fulfilling prophesy. Who wins? Everyone, because he is a promoter of the forward progression of the human race. That is a good thing.

The Moller Skycar is actually possible, I think I have a better design based on a motorcycle chassis. Thinking Out Loud and perhaps of interest in 2007.

Over 40 New Cruise Ships Planned To Launch By 2010

Cruise enthusiasts have been in a gleeful state over the last year due to the abundance of new ships that have launched. If that’s what makes you happy, you ought to find yourself delirious with joy over the announcements about 40+ new ships to take to the seas during the next three-years.

Practically every major cruise line has plans for a least one new vessel: Many have three or even four slated by 2010. And, just as the number of new ships is growing, so is the trend toward building bigger and more luxurious vessels.

Carnival

Although the smallest ships of the lot, Carnival has the most projects in the works over the next three-years. Ranging in size from 110,000 tons to 130,000 tons, Carnival’s highlight will be “Freedom,” a new class of ship costing about $400 million and carrying 2,974 passengers. With itineraries that include the Western and Eastern Caribbean, European tours to Rome and transatlantic crossings, “Freedom” will give cruise enthusiasts something to look forward to.

Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL)

Announcing its new Freestyle Cruising campaign in 2006 was just another step in a long process of completely revamping the entire NCL fleet from the inside out. Since its buyout in 2000, NCL has made great strides in listening to the cruising population then delivering what they want. With innovations including rock-climbing walls, Garden Villas and bowling alleys, you would think NCL had run out of ideas. It seems not! “Pearl” is slated to launch in October 2007 and has gotten rave reviews thus far. The crowning glory of the NCL fleet, however, will be three ships in an entirely new class deemed “F3.”

Weighing in at 150,000 tons and carrying 5,400 passengers, these “F3” class ships have been described by NCL as, “a further evolution of NCL’s progressive dismantling of the structure, regimentation, and constraints of the traditional cruise experience.” One of the most impressive features is that 100% of outside cabins will have balconies.

Royal Caribbean

Three projects are also on the docket for Royal Caribbean between 2007 and 2010. “Liberty of the Seas” and “Freedom” (yes, Carnival and Royal Caribbean will have ships with the same name) and “Independence of the Seas” all shine far above the rest of the fleet with a tonnage of 160,000 each. Costing in excess of $700 million each, they will accommodate 3,600 passengers respectively. While they will be exceptional vessels offering inventive features, there is one ship that will outdo them. In fact, Royal Caribbean’s grandest vessel yet will outdo every other ship built to date.

Creating an entirely new class of ship, Royal Caribbean has drafted “Genesis.” This will be, to date, the largest ship ever built by any cruise line. It will even surpass the size of “The Queen Mary,” which holds the current record at 151,400 tons.

Accommodating up to 6,400 passengers, “Genesis” will weigh about 220,000 gross tons and cost an estimated $1 billion. Royal Caribbean chairman and CEO Richard Fain brags, “Project Genesis truly is a remarkable ship. Its bold design, daring innovations and technological advancements will delight our existing cruisers and help us draw in new ones.”

Others are also jumping in on the new ship bandwagon. Keep your eyes peeled for “Emerald” from Princess Cruise Lines, “Queen Victoria” from Cunard, and “Solstice” and “Equinox” from Celebrity.

Cruise options are growing more abundant by the day, which makes this a cruiser’s market. The cruise lines are bound to offer more incentives in order to fill these new, expensive ships. Stay on the alert for what are bound to be incredible bargains to come.

Cruising to Bermuda: Tips for Getting Around the Island

How do you cover the whole Island of Bermuda in a very short time if visiting via a large cruise ship? Many cruises from the East Coast sail directly to Bermuda for an entire itinerary. Some of the cruise lines sailing out of New York City (including NCL and Princess) include a stop in Bermuda on the way down or coming back from the Caribbean. Bermuda can be broken down into three major tourist hubs (not counting all of the beaches): The West End (King’s Wharf), Hamilton, and St. George.

The larger cruise ships dock at The West End (King's Wharf). For those passengers wanting to visit St George, they will find that this is quite the trek across the island. (The original settlement of Bermuda began in St. George nearly 400 years ago.) I have found three ways to get there via public transportation.

1) Bus from The West End (King's Wharf) to St. George

Runs all day but a long, long ride (but, hey you are in Bermuda).

2) Ferry to Hamilton and then bus to St. George

A little more complex, but you can work in a visit while in Hamilton after your visit to St George.

3) Direct Ferry access to St. George

By far the quickest way to St George is with direct ferry service right from The West End. Bear in mind that the last direct ferry back to The West End is in the afternoon, so if you would like to experience direct ferry service plan on departing for St George first thing in the morning.

Many of us are not as paranoid as we should be about our belongings while we’re on vacation. Stolen items are a frequent occurrence, however—even in the best of hotels. The good news is that if you’ve picked a good hotel, you should be provided with a private, in-room hotel safe. Here are seven reasons why you should always make use of that safe for your belongings—especially the expensive ones—while you’re on holiday.

Because wages can be low in many countries—and your digital camera can look tempting. Depending on the country you’re travelling in, wages could be very low compared to what we make in the U.K.—as low as a few pounds of less per day. Valuables such as digital cameras and jewellery can occasionally provide a compelling temptation for the odd less honest hotel staff, and this can happen at even the nicest of hotels. If the price they could get for your valuables could provide a few months’ worth of wages its not difficult to see you need to take precautions. If you want to help people in less fortunate countries, research charities and make a healthy donation of your own free will—don’t let your contribution be inadvertent.

Because British passports are valuable on the black market. British passports are at a premium in some countries. Many people who do business in false passports often actually use real ones stolen from travellers. Pickpockets are as much of a problem elsewhere as they are in London, so it’s not necessarily safest to keep your passport on you at all times. It’s vital when you’re in a foreign country to keep your passport under lock and key.

Because you’re not the only one with a key to your room. The cleaning staff has a key. The concierge has a key. With all these extra keys, who knows who could be in your room when you’re out? Knowing this, it’s best to protect your valuables from anyone who comes into your room.

Because you could get the sack if you don’t. If you’re on a business trip, chances are you have along some expensive equipment—a laptop, a BlackBerry, company equipment to demonstrate, etc. If your company’s property comes back damaged—or doesn’t come back at all—you could be the one who gets the blame. Prevent anything so drastic from happening by using the hotel safe to protect your company’s valuables.

Because leaving money on your nightstand is like asking for someone to take it. And not necessarily with the intention of robbing you. Cleaning staff could think you’re leaving them a tip if you leave out a few bills on your nightstand, dresser, or countertop. Tipping is the polite thing to do when you’re staying in a hotel, but make sure you do it intentionally.

When we travel, we often carry more money with us than we would at home—in the form of cash or travellers’ cheques. Keep your money in the hotel safe, and you’ll have much more peace of mind while you’re out exploring.

Because identity theft can happen anywhere. If you’ve brought credit cards, a social security card, a passport, a cheque book, or any other personal documents with you, don’t leave them where others can see them—including out in plain view in your room. It’s easy for someone to get hold of your room key—there are so many copies floating around the hotel, after all—and copy down your pertinent information without taking a thing. You’ll never know your identity was stolen until you start getting bills for things you didn’t buy. Play it safe and use that hotel safe—it’s there to protect you.

Even the most perfectly planned dream holiday can turn into a nightmare if you get robbed. So don’t make yourself an easy target. Use all the safety precautions at your disposal, including your hotel safe.
